There are several recurring themes that are associated with marital distress. The most frequent are poor communication or lack of communication, unrealistic expectations that spouses may hold about each other or their marriage, and a lack of intimacy or loving feelings between spouses. The Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach consists of the therapist working with the couple to identify both the thoughts and the behaviors that are causing distress in the marriage, and to change those thoughts in order to readjust the behaviors.
