Tinnitus is characterized as the perception of sound when there is no existing noise outside. In some instances, those suffering from tinnitus may have their daily functioning impaired. Currently, there is no cure. However, while CBT cannot eliminate the symptoms of tinnitus, treatment can restore negative reactions to a healthier, more positive outlook. By changing a person’s thoughts about tinnitus, CBT helps individuals adjust to the ongoing sounds as well as alleviate the accompanying emotional risks of tinnitus, including (but not limited to): depression, anxiety, insomnia, rumination.
