What is Sport and Performance Psychology?

Sport Psychology is a multidisciplinary field aimed at understanding how psychological factors affect an individual’s performance and assisting individuals with utilizing psychological skills to achieve optimal mental health and to improve performance. In addition, the field of Sport Psychology attempts to understand how participation in sport affects an individual’s psychological development, health, and well-being.

Performance Psychology is the study and application of psychological principles of human performance to help people consistently perform in the upper range of their capabilities and more thoroughly enjoy the performance process (American Psychological Association – Division 47).

Sport and Performance Psychology focuses on understanding and applying psychological skills that impact an individual’s performance, enjoyment and engagement, and overall psychosocial development of the whole person.

Sport and Performance Psychology utilizes a holistic approach to perform at one’s best on a more consistent basis, including benefits of improving confidence, ability to focus and concentrate in the present moment, expanding strategies to cope with adversity, increasing team communication and cohesion, and developing the psychological skills to achieve one’s potential.

A successful performance generally is composed of three things.  First, one has to be physically prepared. Second, one has to be technically prepared in the skills and strategies of one’s sport or performing art. Third, one must also be mentally prepared with an optimal level of self-confidence and to able to focus and concentrate in the present moment.  Psychological skills training refers to the systematic and consistent practice of psychological skills and is a necessary part of performance success.

Athletes and performing artists (e.g., dance, music, theatre) from a wide variety of sports and performing arts recognize the importance of the mental side of performance. More specifically, individuals involved with sport and performing arts understand that to perform at a peak and consistent level, one must possess and utilize a number of psychological skills.
